Abstract
A generalized BRST formalism is developed and used to quantize Witten's field theory of interacting open bosonic strings. The method is based on an off-shell nilpotent BRST symmetry, which is realized by introducing a set of auxiliary fields. An important role in our approach is played by the structure of the classical gauge algebra.
