Abstract

Bob Mead lay on the cold stainless steel table, staring at the ceiling. A hydraulic motor churned and lifted him into position, aligning him with beams that would start to go to work on the lesion beneath his skull. As the technician pulled the hardened plastic mask over his face and popped the locks into the plastic frame where his head rested, he found himself comfortably unable to move. The next 15 min, accompanied by the soundtrack of his choosing, left him with the opportunity to consider a number of topics—but he was preoccupied with his nose. What would he do if it itched? With the firm warning to remain still lingering in his mind, he shifted his concentration to the personalised mask that kept him in position and ensured that the radiation would find its way to the precise location required. Contemplating the mask, the thought crossed his mind: what will happen to the personalised plastic when his treatment is over?
