Abstract

A special system of countermeasures to ensure safe radiological management of contaminated forests has been introduced recently in contaminated territories of the Russian Federation. This contamination consists of long lived radionuclides. These territories include 133 forest management units with 350 forestries (forest management sub-units). The area contaminated due to the Chernobyl and East Ural accidents is estimated to be at about 1 and 0.5 million hectares, respectively. About two million hectares have been contaminated in the Altay region and in the Mount Altay Republic due to weapons testing at the Semipalatinsk Testing area. In addition, the Federated forest Service is responsible for forest management of vast territories contaminated by other, smaller scale nuclear accidents.
