Abstract

Background In Norway (pop. 5.1 million), ab. 9.000 hip fractures occur annually, 25% in nursing homes. Average age is 80 years, 70% are women. Many falls can be prevented. A study of the costs of treatment, care, and rehabilitation was undertaken for motivation of increased prevention activities locally and nationally. Method Detailed economic data of hospital and municipality costs were collected one year before the fracture to one year after of 396 patients operated at St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim 2008-11. …
