Abstract
This talk is a review of the methods used to estimate the proton total cross section in the SSC energy range from observations of air showers with energies of order 10 18 eV. The relation between this kind of measurement and the cross section is rather indirect. I briefly describe each of the essential steps and discuss the uncertainty that it introduces.
