Abstract
In cosmology the peculiar situation arises that all the parameters of a standard cosmological model are precisely measured, whereas within the context of this model 95 % of the cosmic matter and energy density are unknown quantities: 27 % are accounted for by nonbaryonic dark matter particles, and 68 % by a mysterious something called dark energy. The astronomical observations leading to this conclusion are presented in this article, the status of the experiments searching for dark matter is reviewed, and some aspects of possible connections between dark energy and fundamental theories are discussed.
