Abstract

The term corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) was first coined about 40 years ago to describe a hypothalamic derivative that explicitly induces the release of pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). In 1981, the 41-amino-acid sequence of CRH was characterized by Vale and his colleagues at the Salk Institute. The neuropeptide has satisfied all the requirements as a hypophysiotropic hormone that specifically activates pituitary corticotropes to augment the production of proopiomelanocortin (POMC), the precursor of ACTH, and the release of ACTH.
