Abstract

The arousal state of an organism underlies all behavioral responses. Arousal can lead to greater performance and productivity; however, in excess it can also lead to stress. In this review, we give a brief synopsis of the neuroanatomical and neurochemical basis of arousal and provide examples of how disorders of arousal affect everyday life.
