Abstract

The article presents the work carried out to create a surface layer, ultimately on cast iron brake discs, by theZeroFlow method using regulated gas nitriding. The presented research is aimed at creating a nitrided layerwith corrosive wear resistance maintained at the stage of brake disc manufacture, waiting for sale of a newvehicle, and even during further exploitation. Examples of nitriding parameters enabling such treatment ofbrake discs made of flake cast iron are presented. The research also includes measurements of the roughnessof the working areas of brake discs before and after nitriding. The properties of the nitrided layers producedare assessed following microscopic observations and microhardness measurements using the Vickers method.The impact of nitrided layers on corrosive wear is also analyzed by observing the behavior of the surfaces ofthe tested discs in a corrosive environment in the so-called “corrosion experiment.”
