Abstract

The corrosion resistance and anomalous hydrogen evolution of extruded cast and powder metallurgical (PM) Mg-1Zn alloy were investigated. Potentiodynamic polarization revealed that the PM Mg-1Zn alloy actively corroded at the OCP due to enhanced cathodic kinetics, whereas the cast Mg-1Zn alloy remained spontaneously passive. HE measurements confirmed that the cast Mg-1Zn alloy exhibited lower HE rates than the PM Mg-1Zn alloy. Rp values for the PM Mg-1Zn alloy were remarkably lower than for the cast Mg-1Zn alloy. The anomalous HE rates were higher for the PM Mg-1Zn alloy with over 90% of the charge ratio associated with anomalous HE.
