Abstract

SPRINGS TO MIND. In any mechanism incorporating a spring, the spring is the most highly stressed component and therefore the part most likely to fail if not properly designed and manufactured. Recently a submarine oil pipeline was blocked when an internal wall‐scraping mechanism became jammed. The blockage could only be cleared by lifting the pipe from the sea‐bed and renewing the affected section. The fault was found to be due to a spring in the scraping gear which had failed by corrosion.
