Abstract

Bulk (Zr58Nb3Cu16Ni13Al10)100-xYx (x = 0, 0.5, 2.5 at.%) metallic glasses exhibited good passivation ability and outstanding corrosion resistance in de-aerated 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution. It was mainly beneficial from the stable passive film which mainly consisted of ZrO2 and Al2O3. However, the defects concentration in the passive films increased with the increasing yttrium content in the Zr-based BMGs. The yttrium additions improved the electrochemical homogeneities of the Zr-based BMGs, but facilitated the dissolution of Cu, resulting in a slight deterioration of corrosion resistance of the Zr-based BMGs.
