Abstract
In the late Dr A. N. Stroh’s paper on ‘The formation of cracks as a result of plastic flow’ ( Proc. Roy. Soc . A, 223, 404; 1954), in table 1 the values quoted for the rigidity modulus of copper, silver and gold are in fact values of Young’s modulus. When this error is corrected, values of the dimensionless parameter a become approximately 0-16 for these three metals, instead of 0.06. The condition for starting a crack (equation (12a)) thus becomes no 0 > 2 G , instead of no 0 > 0.7 G . Stroh’s conclusion for the required number of dislocations piled up to start a crack, about 1000, is not significantly altered (equation (44)).
