Abstract
Objective To investigate the correlation of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) with serum levels of homocysteine (Hcy), uric acid (UA), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) in hypertensive patients complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods 90 hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (a combined group), 90 hypertensive patients (a hypertension group), and 90 healthy objects (a control group) diagnosed or examined at our hospital from January to August, 2018 were randomly selected. The serum levels of Hcy, UA, ICAM-1, MMP-9, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as well as carotid IMT were measured in the three groups, and their correlations were analyzed. Results There were no statistical differences in the serum levels of TG, TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C between the control group and the hypertension group (all P>0.05). The serum levels of TG, TC, and LDL-C were higher and the serum HDL-C level was lower in the combined group than in the hypertension group and the control group (all P<0.05). The serum levels of Hcy, UA, ICAM-1, and MMP-9 in the combined group and hypertension group were significantly higher than those in the control group (all P<0.05). The serum levels of Hcy, UA, ICAM-1, and MMP-9 in the combined group were significantly higher than those in the hypertensive group (all P<0.05). The IMT values in the combined group and the hypertension group were significantly higher than that in the control group (both P<0.05); the IMT value in the combined group was significantly higher than that in the hypertension group (P<0.05). The serum levels of Hcy, UA, ICAM-1, and MMP-9 in the hypertensive patients with T2DM positively correlated with IMT (all P<0.05). Conclusion The serum levels of Hcy, UA, ICAM-1, and MMP-9 in hypertensive patients complicated with T2DM are higher than those in patients with hypertension or healthy people, and relate to carotid atherosclerosis.
