Abstract

Objective To explore the current status of nurse managers′ leadership behavior and nurses′ job burnout, and to explore the correlation between nurse managers′ leadership and nurses′ job burnout. Methods This was a cross-sectional survey using cluster sampling method. The questionnaire survey was conducted in 120 clinical nurses from Harbin, and the nurse managers′ leadership behavior and nurses′ job burnout were investigated. SPSS 17.0 was used to analyze the data, and the correlation between the nurse managers′ leadership behavior and the nurses′ job burnout was analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis. Results The total score of nurse mangers′ leadership behavior was (71.17±5.33). Performance (P) score was (37.90±4.87) and maintenance (M) score was (32.87±6.38). The detection rate of nurses′ job burnout was 96.67%, and the total score of nurses′ job burnout was (58.43±7.28), in which the scores of exhaustion, cynicism and reduced personal accomplishment were (25.07±3.27), (14.73±3.22)and(18.57±3.67), respectively. The nurse managers′ leadership behavior was negatively correlated with the nurses′ job burnout (r=-0.53, P<0.05). Conclusions The more prominent nursing leadership behavior is, the lower degree of job burnout. PM style is recommended to nurse managers in order to reduce nurses′ job burnout as well as to improve the willingness of retention. Key words: Nurse; Nurse manager; Leadership behavior; Job burnout
