Abstract
The level of pressure exerted by fluid concrete is not yet well understood. Tests conducted on instrumented formwork (total system of support for freshly placed concrete including the mould) show that, once a critical pressure has been reached, the real pressure exerted by concrete is less than the hydrostatic pressure recommended by the standard governing formwork sizing. The difference is due to the friction between the concrete and the wall. Janssen's theory concerning ensiled granular material is applied to fresh concrete. A comparative study based on model and experimental results (tribometer, instrumented wall) reveals good agreement between predicted results and on site measurements.
