Abstract

We consider a cluster of eight mixed-valent Mn ions at the corners of a cube embedded into an electron gas. The spins of the localized t 2g electrons are oriented in the magnetic configurations of the A, C and G phases of the manganites. The e g electrons are itinerant with directed and correlated hopping. Using a mean-field slave-boson formulation we study the groundstate energy, and the response to the formation of small polarons, Jahn–Teller distortions and charge order.
