Abstract

We read with interest the report of Peterzén et al1 of 17 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery on the beating heart with a surgically placed axial pump (Hemopump) and control of heart motion with esmolol. In 1995, we reported our own initial experience with this exact technique in two patients.2 In these reported and subsequent cases, we have also found that blood pressure and mixed venous oxygen saturation returned to acceptable levels with phenylephrine support. Although Peterzén et al1 did not report total doses of esmolol used, their description of initial bolus doses, large-dose infusions, and supplementary boluses mirrors our experience.
