Abstract

New coreless transmitting (Tx) coils with conductive metal shield for wide-range ubiquitous inductive power transfer (IPT) zone, i.e., U-IPT zone, are proposed in this paper. Because commercialized IPT systems are only available for short distance of several centimeters and one-to-one wireless charging, strong demands for the U-IPT zone having long distance wireless charging with 3-D free-positioning charging and simultaneous multiple charging of receiving (Rx) coils are currently increasing. To create magnetic field in a wide 3-D space such as a single room, many Tx coils installed above ceilings and walls should have not only electrical and magnetic performance for efficiency of entire IPT system, but also mechanical excellence for installation and human safety. Based on the concept of the U-IPT zone, four major criteria for generating the zone are newly introduced in this paper. An experimental prototype to generate U-IPT zone with the proposed coreless Tx coils at an operating frequency 100 kHz was fabricated and verified by experiment. As a result, the proposed Tx coils achieved 3-D free-positioning wireless charging with plane structure of Tx and Rx coils and 80% of magnetic field uniformity at z = l/2.
