Abstract

Reactions of copper(II) salts with the ligand 1,2-bis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene ( L 1) and the isomeric ligands 1,2,3,4-tetrakis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene ( L 2) and 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene ( L 3) give copper(II) complexes, some of which have been characterised by X-ray crystallography. [Cu( L 1)Cl 2] is found to be a one-dimensional coordination polymer, containing two subtly different copper atom environments. By contrast, [Cu 2( L 2)Cl 4] and [Cu 2( L 3)(NO 3) 4] are discrete species with, in each case, the copper atoms chelated by adjacent ligand arms.
