Abstract

Copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate used as pour-point depressants for residual fuel oil cover such a wide range that it is impossible to arrive at a logical basis for synthesizing copolymers. The present work aims at a more precise definition of the composition and molecular weight of copolymers to ensure that they will be highly effective additives. Various copolymers were prepared, and compositions determined by IR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of copolymers were estimated on the basis of the MFI. Since the molecular weight or log MFI of the copolymer is a major factor in determining its effectiveness as an additive, the dependence of these indexes on the basic process parameters in the synthesis of ethylene and VA were investigated. Equations derived can be used to determine the pressure for a selected temperature at which a copolymer of the required molecular weight or required MFI can be obtained.
