Abstract

The coordination of cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) with lanthanide cations and their supramolecular assemblies in different media were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In an acidic solution, Q[5] coordinated with Pr3+ and formed a molecular bowl-like complex. In an acidic KCl solution, Q[5] formed heterometallic Sm3+ and K+ ions capsules. In a neutral aqueous NiCl2 solution, an assembly of [Ni(H2O)6]2+ cations and Q[5]/Ln3+ molecular bowl-like complexes resulted in the formation of a hexagonal framework. In an acidic solution containing an alkali salt and a transition-metal salt, an assembly of [Mtrans(H2O)6]2+ cations and Q[5]-based heterometallic capsules also resulted in the formation of hexagonal frameworks.
