Abstract

The European Community contributes more than 55 million ECUs to the PHARE operation, intended to assist Central and Eastern European countries to renew their economies. The overall objectives of scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and these countries are to contribute, in their mutual interest, to the rehabilitation of industry; to promote the quality of life in the societies concerned, and in this way to close the cultural, methodological, and structural gaps between professionals in Eastern and Western Europe, and to integrate scientists from Central and Eastern Europe into the broader European and world community of scientists. Cooperative activities in science and technology between the European Community and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe should take particular account of the special features, priorities, and needs of these countries. Particular attention should be paid to the management of research, research economics, exploitation of research results, and research institutions.
