Abstract

James Cook was born at Marton in Cleveland on 27th October, 1728, the son of a Tweedside Scot also named James Cook. In 1736 the Cook family moved to Great Ayton where James Cook senior's employer paid for the young James to go to the local school. After leaving school he worked on the farm for several years but at seventeen he was sent to learn the grocery business under a Mr. Sanderson of Staithes on the North Yorkshire Coast. Sanderson later introduced him to John Walker of Whitby, a ship owner and master mariner. Cook served on several of Walker's vessels in the North Sea Coal Trade and in the Baltic Trade.
