Abstract

This paper presents a method which can be used to measure both stability and homogeneity of magnetic fields in terms of nuclear side-band oscillation (NSO). By simply monitoring the changes of the NSO frequency ωm, one can calculate the changes of the magnetic field according to the simple formula Δωm=γΔH. The basic principle of NSO and the conditions for stable NSO are elucidated. The measuring accuracy depends on the removal of relaxation oscillation in NSO. The mechanism of relaxation oscillation in NSO is analyzed in detail. The results of measuring the homogeneity distribution of a laboratory magnet are given as well.
