Abstract
In this paper the results of a series of laboratory experiments simulating the possible instabilities in density-gradient solar ponds which can be induced by absorption of sunlight on the sun facing wall are reported. It was observed that under simulated solar pond conditions, convective layers with thickness between 10 – 20 mm can be generated. The front of these layers advance with a speed of 0.2 – 0.3 m/h. It has also been observed that these layers disturb regions far ahead of them by horizontal flows.
