Abstract

The convective effects discussed in this paper occur in vertical arcs operating in the pressure range typical of high-intensity discharge arc lamps—one to ten atmospheres. Particular emphasis is given to mercury-metal halide arcs in which convective flow effects are capable of producing spectacular changes in lamp performance.
