Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the history of semilunar abdominal wall hernias. To verify who described the semilunar line first and who coined the term. MethodReview of the literature. Critical analysis of published articles, books and monographs using the key words: ventral, lateral or semilunar abdominal wall hernia. ResultsBiographical data are presented and the contributions of each author to such hernias are analyzed. Citations were corrected and adapted according to the international standards. Casseri was the first surgeon to illustrate the semilunar line before Spiegel described it. Molliére was the first surgeon to use the term “semilunar Spiegel hernia”, not Klinkosch. ConclusionThe story of the lateral hernias has errors and omissions of important authors. We highlight the contributions of Casseri and Molliére that have been forgotten in abdominal wall surgery texts.
