Abstract

By definition, a valve is a device that controls the flow of liquid or gas. Today's valves can control not only the flow, but the rate, the volume, the pressure, or the direction of liquids, gases, slurries, or dry materials through a pipeline, chute, or similar passageway. This article provides a basic overview of a number of types of valves, including gate, globe, pinch, diaphragm, needle, plug, ball, butterfly, check, relief, and control valves. Simple drawings show the working of the valves and flow through them. Tips for valve selection and maintenance and repair requirements are given.
