Abstract

The paper presents a novel two-stage acoustic resonance free electronic ballast for high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. The ballast consists of a PFC stage to achieve power factor correction and a four quadrants DC/DC converter to supply the lamp with low frequency square wave current. Due to the negative impedance characteristic of the HID lamps, the inverter must be controlled to perform as a current source. The control strategy is described in detail in the paper. The circuit is also verified experimentally.
