Abstract

This paper presents a model of electronic ballast driven High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamp in Matlab Simulink environment. For this purpose, a dynamic conductance based lamp model for 400W High Pressure Sodium Vapour (HPSV) lamp and Low Frequency Square Wave (LFSW) electronic ballast operated at 100Hz frequency are developed separately. A closed loop control strategy is adopted for the ballast model to achieve constant current and constant power operation of the lamp. The developed lamp model is experimentally validated before its inclusion with the developed e-ballast. The electrical characteristics of the developed HID lamp system are simulated for wide range of input voltage. Simulation results show the maximum deviations of constant current and constant power are 1.15% and −1.341% respectively for 180–240V input AC voltage which indicates satisfactory performance of the developed lamp system model.
