Abstract

Because of the large amount of renewable energy, the renewable power system will be the back-bone of the energy system in future power grid. Over the time, the renewable energy gradually displaces the coal, oil and gas in our energy consumption patterns. If we are to integrate a large amount of renewable energy into the power system and an efficient socio-economic way, we must rethink and reconfigure our energy systems. The intelligent power grid or smart grid is the key to realize this transformation. Among the several renewable sources, multi-megawatt wind energy conversion systems (WECSs), often organized in a wind farm, are the back bone of renwable power generation. The paper deals with wind farms based smart grid. The smart grid composes of wind farms, smart houses, grid side energy storage system. A electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) based energy storage system is considered in this system. The surplus power of the smart houses sends back to the grid, and grid side energy storage system ensures to supply a smooth power to the grid. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the numerical simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
