Abstract
This work proposes a supplementary control loop for wind generation units based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). The control loop aims at improving the small-signal stability margin of power systems. Control inputs typically available in commercial wind generation units were employed in the study. Modal analyses were performed in order to evaluate and define the best pair of input-output to include the proposed supplementary control loop. Different methodologies were employed in the design of controllers to damp electromechanical oscillations caused by wind generation units based on DFIG and by conventional synchronous generators. The proposed control loop is evaluated based on two different power system models. The linear and nonlinear analyses have shown the effectiveness of the supplementary control loop in improving the small-signal stability margin of the power system.
