Abstract

Abstract A small plot field study was conducted in a commercial onion field near Mission, Texas, to evaluate the efficacy of selected insecticides against thrips. Plots measured 80 inches (2 double row beds on 40 inch centers) by 25 ft. A randomized complete block design with 4 replications was used. Treatments were applied on 10 Mar with a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer (2 10 X hollow cone nozzles per row; 40 psi; 57 gal/acre). Thrips population density was determined by sampling 5 randomly selected plants from the center 2 rows of each plot. The leaves of the selected plants were cut off at the top of the onion bulb and all thrips present on the leaves (or in the neck) were counted. Pretreatment counts were taken randomly across plots.
