Abstract

A nonlinear device based on nonlinear total internal reflection is suggested which provides a more than ten-fold shortening of the laser pulse and smooth variation of the pulse duration due to double reflection from the interface between transparent and absorbing media. Results are presented for the shape and duration of the pulse components that have been reflected and transmitted by the interface.
