Abstract

The Hokkaido Islands are marked by a cold climate despite being low in latitude; as a result, snow, ice, sea ice and freezing of ground have caused disaster in large numbers. Members of the Institute of Low Temperature Science and another group have conducted studies concerning the disaster and developed a variety of devices to prevent it from occurring. This paper presents a short review on the work devoted to prevent the disaster related to frost heaving, avalanche, snow drifting, snow removal, snow on the roof, snow accretion on electric lines, sea ice, and ice accretion on ships.
