Abstract
The laser ablation characteristics of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films have been investigated as a function of several parameters by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Particles ejection which compromises the quality of films was analyzed in detail. Self-assembled particles that aligned along the grain boundaries were found in the as-deposited YSZ films on CeO2/Ni–W templates for the first time, to our knowledge. A simple physical model was proposed to explain this unique phenomenon. We believe this model may supply some clues to attain a particle-free, smooth, and high crystalline buffer layers for HTS layer.
