Abstract

Abstract Twenty-four container grown Pachystachys lutea Nees. heavily infested with nigra scale Parassaissetia nigra (Nietner) were chosen for treatment. Test plants were 24 to 30 in tall, growing in 1 gal pots. All stages of nigra scale were present. Chevron speader sticker was added to all treatments at the rate of 2.4 ml/gal of spray mixture. A single application of each test material was made outdoors on 21 Oct. The foliage of all plants was sprayed to runoff using hand-held compressed air sprayers. Treatments were replicated three times and arranged in a RCB design. Plants were returned to the greenhouse after they had air dried. Mortality was determined on 1 Nov. by counting 100 individuals per plant. Counts were made utilizing a stereomicroscope by examining each scale and classifying it as living if normally colored and full-bodied, or dead if it was discolored and shriveled or dried.
