Abstract

Practical experiences with the control of bulking sludge are reported. The control methods include: increase of the specific weight of the floc, damage of filamentous organisms, removal of factors causing growth of filamentous organisms and generation of process conditions that adversely affect the growth of filamentous organisms. Plug flow conditions that cause a time varying substrate concentration profile turned out to be a successful tool in the prevention of bulking, however, in some cases a combination with other methods including chlorination was necessary.
