Abstract
Abstract Two production locations were selected for this test. The Beltsville site is a sandy loam soil type with the Saranac AR variety of alfalfa. The Denton-Williamsburg alfalfa stand is grown on a sandy soil. The Denton stand was harvested 5 days before the Beltsville site so the crop developmental stage was similar. Tip damage levels at both sites exceeded the 50-60% level. Pupation was also underway in both areas. Treatment plots were 40 ft x 40 ft and arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates at each site. Precounts and treatments were made May 22 (Beltsville) and May 19 (Denton). Precounts averaged 100 larvae/sweep at Beltsville and 59 larvae/sweep at Denton. A random single 180° sweep with a 15 inch dia. net was made in each plot and the number of larvae recorded. Sprays were applied with a “back-pack” CO2 pressure sprayer calibrated to deliver 20 gpa at 30 psi. Post treatment counts were made May 26 Beltsville and May 24 Denton.
