Abstract

The possibility of restoring controlled movements to a paralysed arm, by means of electrical stimulation of skeletal muscle, is investigated. The concept is applied to the elbow joint of the human arm, by surface stimulation of the biceps and triceps muscles, in a closedloop position-control system. The results indicate that the method is feasible, but that more basic data is needed before an optimal control is attained.
