Abstract

This paper proposes an engine governor (GVR) controller of genset suitable to dc microgrid. The conventional genset controller is vulnerable to load disturbance and results in a considerable speed fluctuation, or frequency variation, of the generator. Moreover, variable speed operation of genset, which increases fuel efficiency of the genset compared with the conventional constant speed operation, would weaken the dc grid stability against severe load disturbance. This paper proposes an engine GVR controller designed with consideration of dynamic stability. The controller incorporates a dc grid voltage regulation as well as an additional acceleration capability, providing instant reaction to sudden load disturbance. The design and analysis of the proposed controller is performed theoretically, and its effectiveness is verified through a series of experimental tests.
