Abstract

This paper deals with the study of the Travale geothermal field, located in the south-easternmost area of the Larderello region. Geological, hydrogeological and physical data obtained from studies, prospections and deep drilling carried out in the last two decades are summarized. The existence of a large absorption area close to this field has brought about a rapid evolution of the geothermal phenomenon, due to the drainage of producing wells. This evolution is evidenced by a change in the physical characteristics of the fluid from superheated steam to saturated steam and/or hot water. The time-scale of the evolution can be determined on the basis of systematic measurement of hydrostatic levels and temperatures in wells. The study of the Travale field provides some useful indications for the understanding of analogous situations possibly occurring in other geothermal areas.
