Abstract

The challenge of this article is to discuss the contributions of public service as for fire fighting and rescue for sustainable development within the municipalities of Pernambuco, Brazil, from the perspective of municipal government managers in the areas of civil defense, environment and economic development, seeking local and multifaceted views about this question. After a brief review on the subject “Local Sustainable Development”, weaknesses are identified, mainly in aspects related to the sustainability of regions that, in the temporal range of the survey, had no public services herein highlighted. To construct a panorama of the entire Pernambuco state, municipalities with and without mentioned services were elected, contemplating the twelve Pernambuco Regions of Development. Then data were collected with the application of forms addressed to the three managers of the areas already described of 32 municipalities. The main result was that public services under investigation are considered sustainable development factors by the most managers surveyed.
