Abstract

This quantitative study analyzed the use of the metadiscourse markers used in the blotter entries taken from two police stations in the country. Using Metadiscourse Analysis of Hyland, the study reveals that blotter entries from Region 6 contain more hedges and logical connectives; however, blotter entries from National Capital Region (NCR) contain more evidentials. This study concludes that writers of blotter entries from Region 6 are more cautious while writers of blotter entries from NCR tend to sound more certain or authoritarian by observing the use of evidentials. This study also shows that writers from the two discourse communities are aware of the usage of logical connectives as they are evident or can be observed in the collected sample blotter entries.
