Abstract

A continuous fuzzy group is a fuzzy group with continuous membership function on a topological group. We show that if a nontrivial continuous fuzzy group exists then the underlying topological group must be totally disconnected. It is also shown that all locally compact totally disconnected groups are carriers for nontrivial fuzzy groups. More detailed results are obtained for compact groups.
