Abstract
Summary A study was made of the quantities, composition and some of the properties of materials from various sections of the alimentary tract of newborn calves. Data are presented on total weights of contents obtained, on dry weights of contents, on pH and on proximate composition of materials from the stomach, small intestine, cecum and colon. Substances identified in the ash of contents of both the small and the large intestines include 12 of the minerals regarded as essential in animal nutrition. The possible relation of the alimentary contents of the new-born calf to its prenatal nutrition is discussed.
