Abstract

Similar to many other areas of life science research, investigations in exercise physiology have gone through numerous evolutionary changes during the: 20th century. Many of these changes are directly related to improvements in technology. Indeed, the development of electronic gas analyzers, microcomputers, sensitive biochemical assays to measure the concentrations of cellular proteins and enzyme activities, and the tools of molecular biology have all played important roles in forming the research direction for contemporary studies in exercise physiology. In this review, we discuss a brief history of research in exercise physiology and outline how technological improvements have contributed to advancing our knowledge in this discipline.
