Abstract

: This paper discusses the use of contact lenses during diving operations. It is concluded that contact lenses should not be worn during saturation diving. Soft lenses are the first choice for sport and light commercial diving. Hard lenses can also be used for this purpose provided the diver is able to safely complete his dive should the lenses become dislodged. Lenses likely to be used for diving should be fitted in order to maximise gas exchange at the corneal surface. In certain marine situations, soft lenses of wide diameter may provide limited mechanical protection for the eyes from spray and rain. Haptic lenses may also be considered for such conditions.
