Abstract

Many academic libraries use an intermediary technology for scheduling research and consultation appointments with users. A variety of scheduling tools are available on the market, distinguished by features, interface, and price. In 2018, the University of Michigan Library (U-M Library) began testing the use of SpringShare’s LibCal Appointments scheduling tool. The library had already been using other SpringShare products and piloting the use of LibCal as a means for users to book study rooms. Two years out from the initial start of the pilot, it is possible to step back and see the bigger picture of how LibCal has been used across the library. While other academic libraries chronicled the use of scheduling tools, including LibCal, for research consultation bookings, this paper will discuss the experiences of the U-M Library during the appointment scheduling pilot, including challenges, successes, and current applications of LibCal. This work has been affected by oscillating changes in the past years, including the situation of COVID-19 and rapid change to remote workflows, and an entire website redesign project for the Library in Summer 2020.
